The NBHS Band was started in 1959. Under the able leadership of several directors, the NBHS Band slowly developed into one of Western North Carolina's most consistent programs. Much of NBHS band's success is tied to the expectations and traditions set in place by the former band director, Wallace Brown. After 31 years of teaching at NBHS, Mr. Brown retired in June of 2003. In the fall of 2003, Mr. D. Sanford Boone was hired as the NBHS band director.
The school year 2009-2010 has been a unique and rewarding experience for the NBHS Blackhawk Band. It was a year of many great accomplishments and awards. Our proudest moments were our fifth straight year of Superior Ratings at the Western District Concert Festival and the West Region Jazz Festival. In the past 4 years, North Buncombe High School has placed more students in the All-State Jazz Band than any other North Carolina high school.
The NBHS Band curriculum offers Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Winter Guard, Pit Orchestra, and AP Music Theory. In the 2008-2009 year, we placed 18 students in All-county Band, 14 students in All-district Band, 7 students in All-Region Jazz Band, 4 students in All-State Jazz Band and 3 student in All-State Honors Band.
